Personalized health and wellness applications require responsive interaction loops and bulletproof data persistence. When engineering HealthTrack, we architected a full-stack system capable of managing multi-step onboarding calculations, daily meal logs, hydration metrics, and interactive historical charts.
1. Modeling Health & Nutrition Telemetry
Health telemetry requires tracking daily time-series records with foreign key relationships linked to user profile targets (target calories, macro splits, water intake goals, and workout cadences).
2. Type-Safe Schema Design with Prisma
We defined relational models in schema.prisma with composite indexes on [userId, date] to ensure fast queries when rendering weekly and monthly summary views:
model DailyLog {
id String @id @default(cuid())
userId String
date DateTime @db.Date
waterMl Int @default(0)
sleepHours Float @default(0)
meals Meal[]
workouts Workout[]
user User @relation(fields: [userId], references: [id], onDelete: Cascade)
@@unique([userId, date])
@@index([userId, date])
}
3. Multi-Step Onboarding & BMR Engine
The 5-step guided onboarding wizard (Basic Info → Activity Level → Health Targets → Review) calculates Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) client-side using the Mifflin-St Jeor formula before saving the initialized target baseline to PostgreSQL.
4. Optimistic UI Updates for Daily Logging
When a user clicks "Log 250ml Water" or "Add Meal", the UI updates the daily progress ring immediately using React's optimistic state, synchronizing with the database in the background without UI lag.
5. Responsive Data Visualizations with Recharts
We built custom animated area charts and stacked bar visualizers with Recharts to highlight caloric deficits and weekly workout consistency across mobile and desktop screens.
